When we moved from Delaware to Cecil County back in 1971 we put in our first garden on brand new sod. Our entire seven-acre lot was part of a hay field— orchard grass, I guessed. I know when I pushed my first shovel into the ground I was greeted with a rich sandy loam.
I think it was around 1978 that I put in a row of 24 “Delicious” tomato plants and staked them. When these healthy looking plants reached about four feet tall they suddenly started wilting, forcing me to run inside and get out my garden books. One book talked about a tomato vine borer. Rushing back outside, I discovered that sure enough, every plant had a hole drilled into the main trunk, about four inches from the ground. The book suggested I stick a flexible wire probe into this hole and jam it upward; I also jammed it downward, and there was great satisfaction when I noticed worm juice on that wire. [...read more]
